Combination Forging: Each stroke produces two parts

Two Different Parts

Combination forging means producing two different parts at the same time. The two nested parts are shaped in three operations and separated in the fourth. If both require piercing, the center slug is punched out of the smaller part at the fourth station as well.

ADVANTAGES:
The advantages of this process are obvious: it doubles output and saves a lot of material, because the second blank is now located where the waste slug used to be.

THESE TWO BLANKS ARE COMBINATION-FORGED AT 70 A MINUTE. THAT IS, 140 PARTS DROP OUT OF THE MACHINE EVERY MINUTE.

Main Applications

One of the main applications of the combination process is the production of bearing race blanks. Both the outer and inner race of a bearing are forged simultaneously.

We have developed a number of sequences for this. One of them pierces and separates the two races at the fourth station.

Another separates the races at the third station and uses the fourth for piercing and clipping the shoulder off the inner race.

Yet another sequence leaves the pierced races together to be separated in the machining operation.

Equipped Specially

The Hotmatic is equipped specially for these combination jobs. We quote separately on the accessories required.

Why not review your own production to see whether it contains candidates for combination forging?

The two parts should be made in similar quantities, be produced from the same material grade, and have suitably matching dimensions.

Forming Sequence

This is the forming sequence for the combination forging of bearing races by the SPC process.

The outer and inner races are separated at the third station. The outer races drop out, the inner ones are carried to the fourth station for piercing and clipping off the shoulder.
