Dependable and accurate transfer despite heat, cooling water and scale

Efficiency

The efficiency of a Hotformer depends to a great extent on the operating effectiveness of the transfer system.

It must grip the forgings as they are kicked out of the dies, carry them to the next station, position them accurately, release them and go back to the starting position for the next cycle -- all within a fraction of a second and under the most adverse conditions.

No other mechanism is so directly exposed to heat, cooling water and scale.

Reliable Operation

The Hotmatic transfer system owes its exceptionally reliable operation under these conditions to a very simple design principle:

Keep anything that moves out of the tool area! All control components -- shafts, cams, rollers and springs -- are put in a sealed housing bolted to the side of the frame, remote from the hot, dirty, wet zone.

Housing

Protruding form this housing are two sturdy, hard-chrome-plated tubular shafts that enter the tool area, one above the die block and the other below it.

Three pairs of rigid grippers are mounted on these shafts. They ride back and forth with the shafts, opening and closing as the shafts rotate in opposite directions.

The opening and closing of the grippers can be timed individually for each job. You do this with an adjustment cam graduated according to the timing diagram.
