HOT/COLD PROCESS: How a Hotformer can cut your coldforming costs

Advantages:
1: Cheaper Raw Material
Hot-rolled bars cost substantially less than the drawn annealed wire used for coldforming.

2: Main Forming
The main forming operation is done hot. It's easier because there is less deformation resistance and no work hardening.

3: Less Pressure
By the same token, hotforming requires less pressure, which means it can be done with smaller (and faster) machines. And tools last longer for the same reason.

4: Cold Finishing
During cold finishing, you use just enough coldforming to give the part the desired mechanical properties.

5: Final Product Better
The final product is a perfect coldformed part with flawless surface and tight tolerances -- but cheaper.

The Method:
You make a pre-form on the Hotmatic and finish-form it on a Coldformer.

For instance this ball joint housing for the front wheel suspension of passenger cars. The pre-form is made on a Hotmatic AMP 30S - at 140 per minute.

These blanks are sandblasted, phosphate coated, then finish-formed on a vertical Coldformer, and finally trimmed inside and out.

After being case hardened the finished parts are ready for assembly.
